Space Coast Half Marathon with Puppet Runner and Jack

The Space Coast Half Marathon in Cocoa, Florida, was something of an experiment for me. I had run with puppets in 7 previous races and fun runs -- all at Walt Disney World. Most people who run races at Disney approach running a bit differently than at other locations. Costumes are appreciated and encouraged. The experience of the race often overshadows the running itself. That sort of environment is the perfect place for my puppet-running silliness. I wondered what would happen if I took a puppet to a non-Disney race. Space Coast was my first test.

Now, Space Coast has its own bit of silliness. A few people dress up, often in space or science fiction-themed costumes. The entire race staff and many volunteers wear astronaut jumpsuits. It seemed like a good place to try out puppet running away from Disney. Yet, I was concerned at how people who were really looking at running for fast times instead of a good time would handle the whimsy of Puppet Runner.

I needn't have worried.

While some runners actively tuned me out (no offense taken), many were highly entertained by Jack the Monkey. I can't look at the little guy without smiling myself. I particularly enjoyed the fact that the course is primarily a long out-and-back. So, for many miles, I could have Jack encourage the other runners coming towards me. So, I ran near the center line (which I had to do anyway to avoid a large pace group that kept leapfrogging back and forth with me since I was running an even pace and they were switching from run to walk.) Even some of the faster runners smiled at Jack. But what really thrilled me were the people who were obviously struggling who had a moment of distraction from the miles due to a silly running astronaut and his friendly monkey.

As far as the race itself, the Space Coast Half Marathon is amazing. It is so well organized with a beautiful course and so many exceptional amenities and awards that its reputation for excellence seems well-deserved. I still can't decide if the massive medal is actually a medal or a heavy trophy on a lanyard. It stands up by itself, for goodness sake. Plus, a finisher beach towel. Awesome.

So, it looks like puppet running might be a viable thing. It sure is adding fun to my runs - and hopefully for some others too!
